The Challenge
Total Automated Solutions was awarded a contract to design, install and commission a SCADA package to monitor and archive water quality parameters on the Umm Al Nar power and desalination plant located on Sas Al Nakiel Island, Abu Dhabi.
Local environmental regulations stipulate that various water quality parameters are monitored and recorded. Manual sampling and analysis was a highly labour intensive procedure with no automatic monitoring and recording so it was deemed necessary to install an automated system.

Used Profinet protocol for IO communicates over a fibre optic
The Solution
Total Automated Solutions designed the system around a Siemens solution.
Using the Profinet protocol, the distributed IO communicates over a fibre optic backbone. Fibre optic communication was used to achieve a high bandwidth over the long distances.
The use of fibre optic brought significant cost reductions, as it avoided having to lay expensive multicore cables.
The Results
The SCADA top-end requirement was to display the gathered information that allowed real-time monitoring of the entire system as well as trending and logging of each parameter at 20 seconds for one year.
Siemens WinCC was used as this allowed us to make full use of the custom graphics for mimics and topology illustrations. Siemens ‘Maintenance Station’ was installed on the SCADA machine to give the client extended diagnostic functionality, allowing a user to see detailed information about each element of the remote system all the way down to individual I/O cards.
